Film-makers in Delhi

Via Media introduces itself thus: "We are independent filmmakers based in New Delhi, India, involved in the production of documentary films and other electronic media products on topics of science, technology, art, society and culture for last ten years." Films they have worked on are listed here. One of the films on this page includes Buddha Weeps in Jadugoda. They've edited and voiced this hour long documentary about the effects of Uranium mining on the tribal people of Jadugoda in Jharkhand (Bihar). Directed by Sri Prakash of Ranchi (April 1999). Participated and won the third prize at the Himal South Asian Film Festival, Kathmandu, Nepal in September 1999.

I am aware that Yes, Documentaries are very less shown on TV and as such there is no platform where the documentary makers can telecast their films at a reasonable charge. However I am launching an internet channel, which would be speciafiocally for documentaries, where the makers can showcase their films at a reasonable cost. I am sure that most documentary film makers do not have a hassle if people circulate their work. But it is important to remember that unless you state explicitly that people have a right to do so, to use your work etc it is presumed that they do not have a right to do so.

One of the biggest problems faced by documentary film makers in India has been the question of circulation and distribution. This is an issue which has been discussed in a number of meetings as well as on electronic mailing-lists in cyberspace. If the work were available freely (again note this does not mean that you cannot charge for the documentary, but means that a person who has bought a copy may make a copy and distribute it to others), there would a far greater circulation of documentaries amongst other film makers, students, activists, scholars and general public.
